A racing start in Liverpool

The first event of the racing season saw us head north to Liverpool with two crews of Worcester Dragons and Worcester Dragonflies.  The mood in the camp was buoyant and everyone was looking forward to a good race.

The morning was the 500m races with our Dragons out first racing Powerhouse and Raging Dragons.  A comfortable win put them straight through to the Semi’s where they took on Crusaders and Powerhouse and the first Major Final of the year as the 2nd fastest crew of the day.

After a close race with Amathus and Tao in the major final it was a 2nd place for Worcester and our first trophy of the day!

The Dragonflies started well with a consistent time throughout their races and narrowly missed out in reaching the Plate Major final and made the Plate Minor Final – however their times were quicker than our closest rivals and proved that they are in for a good season.

The middle of the day was our fun event with a paired buoys racing – Worcester ran well and again made the final against Amathus and a 2nd place for our 2nd trophy of the day.

Worcester Ladies entered a strong crew and with 2 other ladies crews in the race held off all competition to cross the line in 1st place – narrowly edging out Amathus Ladies on home ground.

Our last race of the day was a 2000m pursuit race with 2 turns so our helms had a lot of work to do in the boat to get us round quickly and safely!

With support from the bank and the bridges the crews set off at 20 second intervals and in a tough race it was a tight finish and nervous wait while the times were calculated and the results released.   A delighted Worcester had held onto 2nd place in the race with a 7 second lead over 3rd place Tao.

A tired but delighted team picked up the 4 trophies at the prize giving before a journey back down south to celebrate a successful day!
